The USS Abner Read Navy destroyer hit a sea mine in the waters near Kiska, Alaska on August 18, 1943 which blew off the stern of the ship and took the lives of 71 sailors. Sunday Doris Rotterman, widow of WWII Veteran Bob Rotterman, discusses Bob’s experience on the Abner Read. In the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the Abner Read was sunk by a Kamikaze attack.
