Andre Chappaz, 1885th Engineer Battalion

Interview with World War II veteran Andre Chappaz, 1885th Engineer Battalion, born to French parents in the United States.

94 year old Andre Chappaz, was born to French parents living in San Francisco. They moved back to Paris when he was a child. After the riots in Paris in 1936, 1937, it became obvious to Andre’s father that the French could not stand against the German war machine and he moved the family back to San Francisco. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, young Andre was eager to serve.

He ended up with 1885th Engineer Battalion which built the NW airfield on Guam in 54 days. Andre came in from mowing his lawn to do this fabulous phone interview.
